World famous picture book author, Eric Carle expired on May 23rd, 2021 at the age of 91.
Eric Carle’s masterpiece, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” was loved by children all over the world. It was translated into 65 languages including Japanese, and it has sold around 54 million copies worldwide.
I think it is a book of hope. Children need hope. You, little insignificant caterpillar can grow up into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent.

I was also one of the children who loved the book and read over and over again in my childhood. The colorful, rhythmic pop-up book attracted me a lot. Not only me, but my siblings also loved it and the book became worn and tattered. The special part of the book is the design of the pages, with perforated pages and pages in various widths.
It is definitely one of the best picture book in the world. The book will give hope to people of all ages, not only for children but also for adult. This colorful cover of the book may brighten your room if you put it on your bookshelf as an interior.
世界中で有名な絵本作家のエリック・カール氏が、2021年5月23日に91歳でお亡くなりになりました。
エリック・カール氏の代表作「はらぺこあおむし」は、世界中の子どもたちに愛された名作です。これまでに日本語を含む65カ国語に翻訳され、5400万部以上が世界中の子供たちに届きました。
この本は希望の本なのだと思う。子どもは希望が必要だ。ちっぽけで取るに足らないあおむし（君）が、成長して美しい蝶になり才能とともに世界に羽ばたくのだから。

私自身も子どもの頃にこの本を何度も何度も繰り返して読みました。カラフルで、リズミカルな言葉の仕掛け絵本に惹きつけられました。私だけでなくきょうだいそろって大好きだったので、本はボロボロになってしまいました。穴に指を差し込んだり、幅のまちまちなページを何度もめくったり、子どもにとってこんなに面白い絵本は他にありませんでした。
英語の原文を見てみると、私たちの慣れ親しんでいる日本語の言葉とは違っていました。最初の一文を例としてあげてみます。

英語は韻を踏んで文章が作られていますが、そのまま日本語に直訳するとリズム感がなくなってしまいます。訳者のもりひさし氏は、日本語でもリズム感が出るように非常に上手に情景を翻訳されていたんだなと、大人になってはじめて気付きました。「はらぺこあおむし」が日本で有名になった理由はいくつかあるようですが、この素晴らしい翻訳も日本語版が50年にわたり愛され続けている理由の一つではないかと思われます。
「はらぺこあおむし」は間違いなく世界中でも最高の絵本です。子どもだけでなく大人にも、すべての年代の人々に希望を与えてくれる本です。カラフルな表紙は、本棚に飾れば部屋を明るくしてくれるインテリアとしても良さそうです。
